MACLAY, J. (New York, NY, 1826--1926). Maclay came to Dubuque in 1853. He entered the wholesale business in the firm of Maclay & Green until 1858 when Green retired. Maclay continued the business until 1875 when the company became J. MACLAY & CO., a hardware business. The company was then one of the two oldest of its kind in the city.
Maclay took an active role in the city. He was a city alderman and served as president of the Bible Society and the St. Andrew's Society. He also served as vice president of the Board of Trade.
His son was John Herbert MACLAY
