The son of Alfred and Mary (Nachtman) Schiltz, began working at the age of twelve on a Milwaukee Railroad Section Gang. An honors student, he graduated in three years from [[LORAS ACADEMY]] in 1948. An exceptional baseball catcher, he played for various professional teams and was selected for an all-star team and trained alongside Mickey Mantle. He was then promoted to a Class A Eastern League before being drafted into the [[KOREAN WAR]]. A gifted mathematician, he served as a cryptographer for the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to play for the New York Yankees organization. There he helped develop three major league pitchers: Eddie Fisher, Jim O'Toole and Don Schwall.
