CHRISTIAN WITNESS. The 1859-1860 Dubuque City Directory listed 110 Main for this newspaper published by J. C. Benedict.

It found little praise from the Express and Herald which ran an editorial in 1859 stating:

The Christian Witness, like some ill-bred whiffet, goes forth
snapping at the heels of everybody except its masters', Someone
             ought to muzzle it. (1)

In March the Express and Herald had charged that the Witness contained :the most scandalous libels on some of our best German citizens. (2)
