In 2009 a $250,000 grant from the Iowa Finance Authority and a $5,000 grant from the Variety Club of Iowa provided financial support for a major renovation of the shelter. Work included a new hip roof, geothermal heating, replacement of floors, a front facade built around the main entrance, repaving the parking lot and creating a play space at the rear of the building for the women and children to enjoy.
