Kohnen was a 1988 graduate of [[WAHLERT HIGH SCHOOL]] and | Kohnen was a 1988 graduate of [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]] and played a horn in the [[COLTS DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS]] in his early teens. Switching his horn for a guitar, Kohnen formed Dave and the Raves, a rock n' roll band, where he played rhythm guitar and was the lead vocalist. He received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Iowa and his master's degree from Old Dominion University and the U.S. Naval War College. In 2008 he was working on his doctorate in maritime history through Kings College in London. Kohnen began his military career in the U.S. Army in enlisted and officer ranks before transferring to the Navy in 2001. | ||
