GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION MAPPING SYSTEM. In February 1997 the announcement was made of the $1.5 million mapping system being prepared for the City of Dubuque. To prepare the maps, the city sent fifty different sources of information to MSE Inc., the Indianapolis company responsible for the project. This information was converted to a data base. Once completed, a user could access a specific building and determine its location on the property and much more.
Part of the project was the development of twenty-seven "coverages," overlays with additional information that could be placed over the base map with simple key strokes on a computer. These coverages included zoning classifications, property owners, and sewer lines. The original twenty-seven would be expanded.
City employees and the general public could access all this information from their desk computers. Public access computers were available at the DUBUQUE CITY HALL and the CARNEGIE-STOUT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
