The son of George and Catherine (Kalmes) Herrig, Eldon graduated from St. Donatus High School and earned his B.A. from [[LORAS COLLEGE]]. He married Marjorie E. Sievers at [[NATIVITY CHURCH]] on October 7, 1950.

Herrig was a member of the local insurance industry for fifty-five years. With his son, Larry, he owned an operated Herrig and Herrig Financial Services. He was a past member of NAFIA and was named to Top of the Table and Million Dollar Roundtable.

Among other executive boards on which he was a member were those of Catholic Charities, [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]], [[ALVERNO APARTMENTS]], Stonehill Care Center, [[LORAS COLLEGE]] Board of Regents, [[SAINT MARK COMMUNITY CENTER]], Dubuque Rescue Mission, [[HILLCREST FAMILY SERVICES]] [[CLARKE COLLEGE]], Operation New View, and the [[DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION]].
