MULGREW OIL COMPANY. In May, 1893, Thomas J. Mulgrew began selling coal for use on ships and in businesses and homes. The THOMAS J. MULGREW COMPANY, added a summer ice business in 1901 to supplement the winter's coal business.

In 1923 Carl and Russell Mulgrew, Thomas' sons, joined the company and Mulgrew's began selling oil and petroleum products including kerosene, heating oil and petroleum. After Thomas died in 1954 and Carl in 1955, Carl's wife, Marie, and son, Pat, took over the leadership of the firm.

Mulgrew's stopped selling coal in the late 1950s, switched suppliers, and merged with another distributor. Pat's son, Jim, joined the company in 1987 and took over the ownership of the business in 1955 when Pat retired.

In 1997, Mulgrew merged with another company in 1997. This added the Iowa City and Des Moines markets for wholesale fuel supply, initially added fourteen retail units, a tank-wagon business as well as LP, bio-diesel, and soy products. In 2005 the company merged with Perfection Oil Company and located its new headquarters to Tamarack Park.
