He was a great lover of sports. While attending Upper Iowa, he won a letter at baseball. Lyon was also one of Dubuque's finest bowlers. Several times city champion, Lyon was a member of the Vici Club, composed of the best bowlers in the city. He was an avic fisherman and hunter.
