CLARKE, E. Lincoln. (Conway, Franklin Co., MA, Nov. 22, 1822-Dubuque,IA,Oct. 7, 1903). Hypnotic dentist. Dr. Clarke, a new arrival to Dubuque in 1861, was possibly the first dentist in Iowa to use hypnosis to prepare a patient for minor surgery. A widely respected teacher, Clarke had students who would later become the presidents of dental societies in Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin.
