He founded the annual presentation of the "Messiah," a production critically acclaimed throughout the Midwest.
Atchison taught courses in church music and frequently contributed articles on music and religious subjects to church magazines. He served as president of the Dubuque Ministerial Association.
President of the DUBUQUE ART ASSOCIATION from 1930 through 1935, Atchison also served as a director of HILLCREST BABY FOLD and the Dubuque Civic Music Association for many years.
