In 1980 the Dubuque Jaycee organization was the fiftieth largest of the eight thousand chapters in the United States. Jerry Fjelseth, then a janitor at [[STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL]], signed up two hundred forty new members in 1980, more than any other Jaycee member in the United States.
