Sheter served in the United States Army during WORLD WAR II and studied piano in Vienna, Austria from 1955 to 1959. Shetler specialized in accompanying singers, having worked with Anneliese Rothenberger, Peter Schreier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender, Hermann Prey, Margaret Price and Thomas Quasthoff.
