A graduate of [[WAHLERT HIGH SCHOOL]] and the University of Iowa College of Law, Wetgen worked as a garbage man for the city of Dubuque the summer after he graduated from Creighton University and then attended the University of Iowa Law School that fall. During the summer after his first year of law school, he worked on Capitol Hill as a summer intern for Iowa Senator Charles Grassley.
