Attending the Games that year was Ames, Iowa native Dhiren Narotam, a world-class competitor, who had been a member of the U. S. national team which competed in the World Championships in Dotmund, Germany in 1889 and Tokyo in 1991. He was also an alternate member of the 1992 U. S. Olympic team.
