As president of the board for the [[DUBUQUE MUSEUM OF ART]], he was involved in more fundraising activities.  With such a resume, John Schmidt was named the 2022 [[FIRST CITIZEN AWARD]] by the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Telegraph Herald&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. &lt;br /&gt;

Schmidt attended St. Anthony School and graduated from [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]] before graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. He moved to Des Moines for two years to work for KPMG, a public accounting firm. He returned to Dubuque in 1984 to work at [[DUBUQUE BANK AND TRUST COMPANY]] and its holding company later renamed HTLF. He served as vice president of finance and the chief financial officer before becoming president of the bank from 2000 to 2004. He worked at the holding company from 2004 to 2013.  By 2022 he had spent approximately nine years at A.Y. McDonald Industries, formerly [[A.Y.MCDONALD MANUFACTURING COMPANY]]. In 2022 Schmidt was senior vice president and chief financial officer.&lt;br /&gt;
