He was elected county auditor in 1906 after serving as a deputy in the office then held by [[WEIMER, John H.\|John H. WEIMER]]. The election, however, was contested. Scharle and his Republican opponent Jesse Haudenschield signed an agreement that Sharle would take office. He would, however, have to post a bond for $4,200 to cover any earnings he would receive if Haudenschield won the recount.
