MCNAMARA, Tim (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 31, 1951--Iowa City, IA, Oct. 18, 2021) In a life of challenges, Tim championed opportunities and was a leader in the efforts to transform the historic Millwork District. A graduate of [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]] and [[LORAS COLLEGE]], Tim was diagnosed with having a tumor growing on his spine which left him partially paralyzed. With radiation, he eventually regained an estimated 90% of the control of his arms. For the next three decades he learned to ski, sail, mountain bike, and rock climb.

Tim continued his search for challenges when he assumed the presidency of Wilmac Property Corporation in 1991. Despite the return of the tumor in 2001, he announced his plans to convert the former "Betty Building" at 9th and Jackson into loft style condominiums. (1) In partnership with [[GRONEN, John|John GRONEN]] as a co-developer of the Millwork District, they worked to develop the Caradco Building into downtown housing and commercial space. In addition to envisioning building restoration, Tim and [[TULLY, Gene|Gene TULLY]] founded Voices from the Warehouse District, a huge art event held in the building which was eventually occupied by [[DUPACO COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION]]. Voices Productions made possible the [[MURALS]] later found on buildings throughout the downtown area. (2) This project led others to see the possibilities of the spaces being used by artists. Tim participated in the 2010 campaign to develop a future vision for the District. His interest in the arts led to him helping to establish [[DUBUQUE...AND ALL THAT JAZZ]].

He received the Elisha Darlin Art Award in 2018. (3)
