During his tenure, Marihart supervised the formation of a high school completion program allowing adults who had never finished high school to receive an equivalent diploma. With the cooperation of the local hospitals, the Dubuque School of Practical Nursing had been established. He also helped establish of apprenticeship and trades training programs and expanded drivers' education courses to include "defensive driving" techniques and a driver education program in cooperation with the Dubuque Municipal Court.</ins></div></td></tr>

In 1926 he began his career in education as a teacher and basketball coach at Nodaway, Iowa. His experience in adult education began in the early 1930s working of training programs for the Virginia Railway Company in West Virginia.</ins></div></td></tr>
