Roerig's interest in art at St. Thomas Academy drew the attention of Father Edmond Coughlin who encouraged him to study three years at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and later completing a four year program at the St. Paul School of Art. He came to Dubuque in 1936 to take charge of the art department of the Taylor-Yonkers Company. His artistic background included figure drawing from Eugene Geary, sculpture from Charles Wells, advertising art from Frederick Calhoun and painting from the internationally famous Cameron Booth.
