The father of Charles H. was a native of France and was involved in the French Revolution.&lt;br /&gt;

Gregoire H. J. had charge of the first steam ferryboat on the [[MISSISSIPPI RIVER]] at Dubuque after the [[ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD]] reached Galena. He operated the ferry until 1864 when he sold out to the railroad to manage large real estate holdings in Iowa and two hundred eighty-nine acres of [[MINING]] property in Missouri. &lt;br /&gt;
