After working as an LPN, she became involved in the Dubuque County Association for Retarded Citizens (the ARC of Dubuque) and was a leader in establishing Area Residential Care and founded Camp Albrecht Acres. She organized the first resident camp program for special needs children in Iowa in 1960 and ran the program until 1974. She was appointed the executive director of the Dubuque County Association for Retarded Citizens Inc. and Executive Director of Albrecht Acres in 1974.
