Based on years of volunteerism to the community and philanthropy, Terry and Paul Friedman were recipients of the 50th annual Telegraph Herald [[FIRST CITIZEN AWARD]]. In recognizing the organizations to have benefited by their generosity, the Telegraph Herald listed among others [[OPENING DOORS]], Divine Word Seminary, Stonehill Franciscan Services, [[CARNEGIE-STOUT PUBLIC LIBRARY]], [[COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER DUBUQUE]], [[CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION]], [[STEEPLE SQUARE]], and the [[BOYS&amp;#039; AND GIRLS&amp;#039; CLUB OF GREATER DUBUQUE]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Terry was a graduate of [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]], [[LORAS COLLEGE]], and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. While working in the office of the [[JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS]] he met Paula who convinced him to remain in Dubuque. He joined [[FRIEDMAN INSURANCE AGENCY]], the family business, in 1980. He has been a member of such professional organizations as the Mid-America Insurance Conference as a board member, Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa as past president, and the Workers Compensation Appeals Board as a member. In 2019 he was the CEO of The Friedman Group. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Paula was a graduate of Aquinas High School in Fort Madison, Iowa and [[CLARKE UNIVERSITY]]. She worked for the Sheppley Company until the birth of their first child when she chose to become a stay-at-home mother.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Community service began through their church where Paula and other mothers performed service projects as a group. Together, Terry and Paula helped other couple prepare for marriage through church-affiliate programs.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Terry began over twenty years of service to the [[DUBUQUE GIRLS&amp;#039; CLUB]] and assisted the organization through a merger in 1999 that led to the Boys&amp;#039; and Girls&amp;#039; Club of Greater Dubuque.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Paul began working with Opening Doors assisting women and children experiencing homelessness. At the time, the organization offered only the [[TERESA SHELTER]] for emergency and extend-stay programs. This was later expanded with [[MARIA HOUSE]] and Francis Apartments. She also undertook to providing meals to people who lost a loved one and making mittens. Usually offered to silent auctions, the mittens are sold with proceeds going to causes holding the auctions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Following the lead of Terry&amp;#039;s parents, the couple joined the board of Divine Word College. From 2004 through 2013 the school developed into offering programs for men and women.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The selection of Terry and Paul created the first father-son recipient case in the history of the First Citizen Award. Terry&amp;#039;s father, the beloved [[FRIEDMAN, Larry|Larry FRIEDMAN]] received the honor in 1999.&lt;br /&gt;
