The discovery of problems with the north wall of the church had been known for years. A monitoring device to determine the growth of crack in the wall had been in place for more than a decade in 2000. Cracks on an interior wall had been covered in restoration work preformed in the 1980s only to reappear. By 2015 it was discovered that the entire structure of the church was in dangerous condition.
