Educated as an attorney in the law office of ex-Governor [[HEMPSTEAD, Stephen\|Stephen HEMPSTEAD]], Eighmey practiced law in Dubuque from 1860 to 1870 as an associate of Judge [[COOLEY, D. N.\|D. N. COOLEY]]. During the [[CIVIL WAR]], Eighmey had the particularly disliked job of local tax collector.

	One of the original directors of [[FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE]], Eighmey became the bank's cashier in 1870 and later vice-president. He became president of the bank in 1890 and held the position for twenty-five years. In addition to his interest in banking, Eighmey was a stockholder in the [[NOVELTY IRON WORKS]] and the [[DUBUQUE COUNTY BANK]] and served as president of the [[NORWEGIAN PLOW COMPANY]], [[WESTPHAL, HINDS ~~& CO.~~]], and the Board of Trade. Eighmey was also interested in railroads. He served as treasurer of the Dubuque and Western Railroad.
