New page

DUBUQUE FIRE AND RESCUE SQUAD. Formed in 1977 after a meeting of the area's civil defense, fire and law enforcement officials, the Squad was a volunteer force of sixteen people operating under Dubuque's office of disaster services.

The first rescue vehicle was a converted 1969 Jeep personnel carrier. Available twenty-four hours daily, the Squad in 1997 was provided a fully-equipped rescue truck, an eighteen-foot rescue boat, and a snowmobile for remote areas in the winter. Members attended a sixty-hour course to become trained and certified by the State of Iowa as emergency rescue technicians. Many took additional courses to become emergency medical technicians.

Service to the community included teaching first aid and CPR to the general public as well as area law enforcement and fire departments. The Squad also provided all emergency medical standby services for the [[FIVE FLAGS CIVIC CENTER]] and worked with the Sherrill and Key West fire departments to provide emergency services. The director of the Squad since its formation was [[GOOCH, Robert P.|Robert P. GOOCH]].
