In 1929 the Central Avenue Merchants' Association (also known as the Central Avenue Business and Professional Men's Association) celebrated the widening and paving of Central Avenue with three "hospitality days." The street had formerly been 40 feet wide with a single street car track south from 13th to Third Street. After the street car company announced it would be abandoning the track south of 13th Street and the single track north of 13th Street, the merchants petitioned that the street be widened to 44 feet. The city council agreed. (1)

While primarily aimed at attracting business to the area, the merchants arranged a series of sales events. (2)
