Jim served in the U.S. Army during the [[KOREAN CONFLICT]] stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. On the G.I. Bill, he graduated from Iowa Falls Community College, Iowa Teacher’s College (UNI) and completed his Master’s in teaching at the University of Northern Colorado.

Jim worked for the [[ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD]] at 49 different stations across Iowa and extending to Galena, Illinois. While attending college, he became a private pilot after a friend taught him to fly. This began a lifelong passion for aviation that he shared with his family. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol.

Jim taught Industrial Education at [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]] until the late 1960s. He then went on to start the Driver’s Education program for the [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]] where he taught until his retirement in 1992.
