Apel, son of [[APEL, Peter|Peter APEL]], played trombone for [[RADIO JIMMIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA]]. Years later he was one of the original founders and charter members of the Thunder Hills Golf and Country Club.

Apel owned and operated [[APEL'S SUPERMARKET]] for twenty-two years before retiring in 1968. He remarked that local groceries came under increased competition from grocery chains. The development of convenience stores brought an end to most of the neighborhood grocery stores which were often required to purchase more from their suppliers than they could sell.
