Anderson entered the US Army from Wiota, WI and was one of four soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor for personal courage in the battle at Bentonville, North Carolina, on March 19, 1865. As a Private, Company B, 31st Wisconsin Infantry, Anderson entirely unassisted, brought from the field an abandoned piece of artillery and saved the gun from falling into the hands of the enemy. &lt;br /&gt;
