The Mississippi River Walk in Dubuque (#10 on the list) and the High Trestle Trail in central Iowa were named the best community spaces in the United States. (1)

			In September 1991 members the city's Long Range Planning Commissioners realized they were dealing with some of Dubuque's most prized and expensive properties. An ad-hoc committee had presented the commission with a list of ideas including: improved public access to the river; reactivation of the former [[DUBUQUE STAR BREWERY]] and possibly adding a restaurant to the building; the creation of more transient boat docking; a river walk with shops, restaurants, and businesses; and a hotel/condominium possibly located on the Fourth Street peninsula north of the [[ICE HARBOR]]. Among those commenting was [[RUSK, David Wm.\|David Wm. RUSK]] noted the need for an outside objective "framework of ideas." Money for the consulting work would need to be provided by the city council. A presentation to the council was planned for October. (2)

			In 1997 THE [[DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE]] submitted a proposal to the [[DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION]] for grant money to fund riverfront development products. The $300,000 proposal was to help construct the Mississippi River Walk River's Edge Plaza and the principal route of the [[HERITAGE TRAIL]]. The grant application asked for $120,000 for the river walk, $109,000 for Heritage Trail and $71,000 for marketing to begin a fund-raising campaign for private contributions.

			In April 2026 the announcement was made that Dubuque's historic Clock Tower could soon be lit up for the first time in its 153-year history.

			The city council unanimously approved a proposal to add lights to the landmark. The civic group Dubuque Forward hoped to have the project finished by Independence Day to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Clock Tower has stood in Dubuque since 1873 but never had been illuminated at night. (33)

	When the Hoegers met in a Chicago hospital in 1939, both were nurses. The idea for the restaurant belonged to Ambrose who lived in a Jewish neighborhood in Chicago. Their first store, at 335 W. Eighth Street was demolished for the construction of the Locust Street [[PARKING RAMP]]. They moved the business a half-block away at 420 W. Eighth. It remained there until 1979 when that building was demolished. They attempted to find a new location, but were discouraged by the requirements that had been established for food handling. 	The law firm, comprised of father and son, was named attorney for the Chicago Great Western railroad when that system extended its line to and through Dubuque. George T. He was a member of the First Congregational Church (later [[FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST]], Dubuque County Bar Association, Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, and the Dubuque lodge of Elks. 	In time believing the campaign in the West was over, Wilkie took a job writing editorials for the ''Chicago Times''. He co-founded the Chicago Press Association and began the ''Times'' London bureau. (11) While there he scored one of the great journalistic scoops of all time by being the first reporter to obtain a copy of the then-new King James version of the '''Bible'''. 			The Dubuque-based material handling and warehouse logistics company, announced in April, 2026 that it would take over the Ryder Systems transportation facility in Waterloo.

			The acquisition was a major expansion for Hodge. Company leaders said they planned to keep the current staff in place at the Waterloo warehouse, and anyone who chose to stay would receive a retention bonus.

			Hodge employed more than 1,000 people across three states. The company was currently under its fourth generation of family ownership. (2)
